In January I confessed to you that intentional movement in 2014 had slipped to the back burner in favor of too much time working behind a computer. While I love writing and teaching about healthy living in the virtual world, my body has been screaming at me to give it a little TLC. I have vowed in 2015 to have more fun, move more, and give myself permission to experience and enjoy a little extra self-care this year. You all know I am a huge advocate of loving yourself and your body no matter where you are on your health and fitness journey, but part of loving one’s self means taking good care of the gift we have been given, our bodies.
I’ve tried out several at home workouts including my kettlebell, Youtube pilates, and 20 minute body weight interval training workouts, but I keep finding that I stay more motivated when in a group setting and a class. There’s something about accountability from other people and feeding off of their energy that pushes me to do more and keeps me coming back every week. Last year I took a group contemporary dance class which I LOVED, but this year I’m exploring my options a little more. I’m trying to find what works for ME. That’s the great thing about exercise and intentional movement. Tailor your exercise to what YOU like. If you aren’t a runner (which I’m not), there are lots of other options that you may love like swimming, yoga, high intensity interval training, biking, spin classes, dancing, or hiking. The options are endless. I’m so fortunate to live in St. Louis, a city teeming with new and different fitness facilities that are fun and go beyond just the regular gym.
Three places in my city (St. Louis) that I am planning to try
(Town and Country)
An interval training class utilizing specialized treadmills that incline to 30% combined with short bursts of high intensity floor work like weights and resistance bands. By combining interval, functional, core and athletic-based training into a one hour high intensity and high-energy session, participants can fire up their internal furnaces and can burn up to 1000 calories (hence the name). Research shows exercising at inclines of 18 degrees or more triples the number of calories burned from fat! Yowza! That sounds intense and fun!
This facility includes two large studio spaces, with an ample reception area and locker and changing spaces. This location hosts about 40 drop-in classes a week for beginner through experienced yoga practitioners, monthly free beginner yoga workshops (called Yoga 101), occasional specialty yoga workshops, a full menu of prenatal classes and workshops, and a highly regarded yoga teacher training program. I’m definitely a beginner, so this will be completely new and different for me, which I’m really excited about.
Dragonfly Fitness & Training offers a variety of options for group clients including Strength & Conditioning, Lift, TRX Conditioning, Boxing Conditioning, Beginner Yoga, and the new and popular Surfset. It’s encouraging to me that they are so friendly here and boast a community with ladies of all fitness levels ready to support you! I love the versatility offered at this location. I’ve never done anything like the Surfset before, so that should be a lot of fun! Note: The Love to Train Package is available for new clients and includes 10 sessions, the Dragonfly Fitness & Training Success Guide, a t-shirt, and a Super Skoop Sampler Pack for just $150. (Use code ALIVE and receive $15 off!)
Self Care and Reward
To keep me motivated and on-track, I’m planning a little reward and self-care. I’m like a toddler and respond very well to rewards and goals. Who doesn’t? Half of staying on track for me is mental anyway, so with something to look forward to, I’m bound to reach my goals.
New Threads: Dimvaloo Active Living
An Activewear Retailer in St. Louis exclusively selling the Lorna Jane Brand. I haven’t decided if I’m going to reward myself with new workout gear before trying the places above or after reaching a goal. Either way, a new fun outfit will be bought! Trust me. You do not want to see my current workout attire. This one looks lovely, don’t you think?
Pampering: American Image Salon and Spa
This will be my big reward for reaching my goal before I go on my ten year anniversary trip to Jamaica in June. A new ‘do or a massage will be just what I need. A busy mom needs a little pampering every once in a while, right? Plus, mama will need a new look for Jamaica!
Good Food: Fit Snack and Taste Guru
I can barely get through a post on this blog without talking about food. You knew it was coming. I just love food. Sorry (not sorry). Eating well is important to me, and our family puts a high priority on choosing nourishing foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Snacky, on the the go food is always a struggle for me though, and it can be such a pain in the patootie to source clean packaged snack food. I’m trying out these two subscription snack companies. A box of snack goodies items valued at over $30 gets shipped to your door each month for $15. They are sister companies, but Taste Guru contains all gluten free items. If you are interested in trying them for yourself, use my links for Fit Snack and Taste Guru also receive a free tote or gym bag with your first purchase!
