This is our weekly guest devotion written by my mom, Estelene. To read her other devotions, check out my Faith Page.
Did you learn as a child the little song about the wise man who but his house upon the rock and the foolish man who built his house on the sand? Well, the words to that song were taken from one of Jesus’ teachings in the Bible.
Matthew 7:21-27 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Jesus’ words are more absolute than the little song. As a child, we learned that if we build our life with a strong foundation (Jesus Christ) we will stand strong when trials come our way.
Now that we are adults, let’s take a deeper and closer look at what Jesus is saying.
I know of someone who recognizes Jesus Christ as God’s Son. He knows the Bible from cover to cover. Actually, he can quote any scripture written. He attends every church service no matter the day of the week. But, without a shadow of a doubt, I know he will NOT enter the gates of heaven when Christ returns for his church. You are probably ready to quote me familiar scriptures regarding judging people and saying, “How can you say such a thing?” It’s simple. I am talking about Satan.
There are many people who acknowledge the fact that Jesus is God’s Son. That doesn’t mean that they are heaven bound. There are those individuals who believe Jesus died on the cross for all men’s sins. Still that doesn’t get their names written in the Book of Life. Once again, Satan was very aware of what Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection accomplished.
Acceptance and repentance are the key words. You must accept Jesus as your Savior and the Lord of your life. Then you must repent—sorry for your sins—and turn completely away from your sins. If He is the Lord of your life, you are going to obey His Word, follow his teachings, and submit to his will. How do you do that?
First of all you must surrender your entire life to him. When I say surrender, I mean turn everything over to Christ, your relationships, your job, your finances, how you think, your desires, etc. Then read and study your Bible daily and stay in constant communication with him through prayer. We are instructed to gather together in His name. Strength is gained in numbers; therefore, staying in fellowship with other believers strengthens our faith.
Have you ever seen a sand castle built on the beach? When the tide rises and rushes over it, the structure is completely destroyed and washed away. I don’t want to face life’s trials and struggles by myself. The burden is too heavy to bear. I’ve tried and failed miserably. My life came crashing down just like a house that was built on the sand. Even though I thought my foundation was strong enough, it crumbled.
Now I look forward to reading and studying God’s Word. I am amazed at how much better I can hear him speak to me. I converse with my Lord throughout the day. I give him praise, I thank him on many occasions, and I ask for his wisdom and guidance when I need an answer.
My house (my life) is built on a solid foundation. Oh sometimes it shakes a bit, but it does not fall. Christ is my foundation.
What about you? Is your house built on a pile of sand that can crumble in an instant, or is your house built on a firm foundation, Jesus Christ?
I started out by saying that talk is cheap. Christ told us that we just can’t talk the talk, we must walk the walk. The religious leaders in Jesus’ day were very good at that. Even though they should have recognized who Jesus was, they totally missed him. They were so in to their religion that they forgot how they should have been living. God does not need religious people. He needs submissive people who love Christ, accept him, and LIVE for him.
I encourage you to fill your mind with God’s Word daily, listen to your local Christian radio station, talk to God throughout the day, and meet with other believers weekly. I promise you that if you give it your best, God will become the center of your life. You will fall deeply in love with Christ. You will experience no greater love. You will notice a change in your thinking and your actions. He will become real. It is an awesome feeling to know that you have a very intimate relationship with God, the Creator of the universe.
