How I Stopped a Fever Blister in its Tracks

September 24, 2013 by Tara 98 Comments

Fever blister final

The tingle, the itch, the slightly swollen, slightly warm bump.  Yup, you know that familiar sensation all too well.  You’re getting a dreaded fever blister.  Ugh!  I have suffered from fever blisters since I was a small child, and they have caused me much inconvenience, teasing, and physical and emotional pain. If you get frequent fever blisters, you know what I mean.

Fever blisters are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus- Type 1, and are extremely common.  They move through several different phases, starting with a tingling sensation, then moving to liquid-filled blisters.  Often the blisters spread and form clusters of blisters.  Eventually they dry up, leaving a scab, and the scab falls off and the lip heals.  With no treatment, the fever blister usually heals within a couple of weeks.

Two weeks is too long for me sport a big scab on my lip.  It’s too long for me not to kiss my husband.  It’s too long for me not to kiss my kids.  I LOATHE fever blisters!

I used to take prescription and over the counter medications to treat my outbreaks, but over time they quit working and some actually made them worse.  After I became interested in natural remedies, I began searching for ways to treat my fever blisters at home.  Truthfully, I don’t get fever blisters nearly as often as I used to since I switched to a real food diet and began pursuing more natural products and remedies in my life, but occasionally they do still make their ugly debut.

Last week, I began getting a tingling sensation on my lip and a small bump.  I knew I had to take action fast!  Guess what?  It worked!  The bump never developed into a full blown blister and vanished completely within a couple of days.  I was thrilled, and I couldn’t wait to share this remedy with you!  This is by far the greatest success I’ve ever had with an at home remedy.

How I Stopped a Fever Blister in its Tracks

1 T. virgin coconut oil

3-4 drops of tea tree oil

I mixed these two ingredients together in a small glass container.

I then used a cotton swab and applied it to the potential blister 3-4 times a day.

I only had to use this remedy for a couple of days, but you may have to use longer depending on your individual case.

**It is important to remember to use this mixture AS SOON as you notice the tingle.  You will have FAR greater success if you catch it as early as possible!

Other Internal Support for Treating and Preventing Fever Blisters

  • Consider a L-lysine supplement and reduce arginine:  There is evidence that a diet higher in lysine and lower in arginine, is also helpful for reducing fever blisters.  Both are amino acids and beneficial to the body, but a diet high in arginine and low in lysine may cause frequent fever blister outbreaks.  For a good chart on ratios of these amino acids in foods, see this article.  Nuts and seeds are at the top of the list.  I am thinking of limiting nuts and seeds to see if my outbreaks lessen.
  • Recognize your triggers and try to avoid them:  Sunburns, chapped lips, trauma to the area, hormonal changes, stress, or a weakened immune system can all be triggers.  If you keep track of your triggers, you may have greater success avoiding them altogether.
  • Reducing stress:  Take long walks, get some fresh air, do some light exercise, take vacations, play, sleep, enjoy life.  Stress can weaken your immune system and cause a host of problems, one of which is fever blisters.  Find some time to unwind and you may see a decrease in the frequency of your outbreaks.
  • Boost the immune system.

Probiotic rich foods and supplements are my favorite way to boost my family’s immune systems.  Kefir, kombucha, and cultured vegetables are my go-to ways to get our daily intake of probiotics.
Cod Liver Oil is another one of my favorite immune system boosters due to its high levels of fat soluble vitamins A, D, and K.
Bone broth:  Here it is again, my beloved bone broth.  lol  Yes it works to help strengthen the gut and immune system.

Do you have any remedies to speed healing time of fever blisters?  I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!

How unpleasant to wake up one morning and discover that the cold is about to appear on your lips. And it’s okay if you will not have to go anywhere the next few days. But if you have an important meeting, a date with a man or dream girl, the situation becomes catastrophic. As a rule, I mentally start to scroll all the knowledge on how to treat a cold on the lips, which means of treatment are at hand. So in that sense, this article is just for me. I found here a lot of useful tips. But it is important to remember that in any case you should not pierce the blisters. They are intended to protect against infections. This applies for blisters in any surface of the body –legs, hands. Here you can find more details https://pinkycloud.com/away-with-the-pain-at-every-step-how-to-get-rid-of-plantar-callosity-calluses-and-plantar-warts. During the treating process, to accelerate your healing time, you should avoid touch your fever blister often. And, make sure that you maintain a good hygiene regime, particularly your hands and your face so that you will not spread the bacteria and virus. Here you can find more tips http://vkool.com/how-to-get-rid-of-fever-blisters/3/. These tips on are not complicated, but persistence and consistency is required to get good permanent results.

As far as I am concerned, Campho is a joke!! I do agree with the L-Lysine! Herpecin is a great lip balm , as well as taking two 1000 tablets of L-Lysine daily on an empty stomach. Lysol also says on the can, kills herpes simple one and two. When I get them (not as often) it is usually from stress. I am almost 59 and have been embarrassed from them since my first menstruation.

Sounds like that would work. Another option is when you first feel the tingle, go get some ice in a bag and hold it on the area as much as you can…it’s a “fever” blister, so freezing it helps.

Yes hold ice on it for 30 mimutes everyday. It will bring blister to the surface and at this point u pop it, make sure to wash hands before and after. Once you’ve popped it, clean again around the blister. I used vapor rub with a q.tip and caked it on the blister. Woke up the next morning while cleaning my lips, I realize the scab is completey gone. Baby it constantly. It will heal way faster. I use abreva too but keeping blister moist is most important, g.luck

I discovered that if I hold a ice cube on the area as soon as I got the tingling sensation, it stopped it in its tracks. I would hold the ice cube on for about 5 minutes, take off for a few minutes, & repeat. If you do this before the blister forms, it will keep it from forming.

I have used the ice for over three years and been totally free of fever blisters after suffering for years with them and I’m well into my sixties now.
The trick is to catch it the minute you feel the tingle. I take a small ice cube and just rub it over the area for a minute and do it a number of times in the day.
But the secret is to stop it at that tingle stage. and be consistent don’t just do it once.

I use ice all the time. It works like a charm. I usually hold it in until the ice completely melts away. I have also found I get fever blisters from every type of lipstick there is out there except Tarte brand. I am allergic to something in lipsticks. It took me forever to figure it out, but after many trials on myself, I found it 100% true.

By accident I discovered that using my Decadent Body Butter, http://www.lifebyjeanie.com/decadent-body-butter/ cleared up the scab within a few hours. It was like watching a time lapse camera. It was probably the combination of cocoa butter and coconut oil – who knows.

Lysine works if I feel one coming on, but what I stumbled upon in Natural Health books is Lemon Balm aka Melissa oil. I used a q-tip to apply it directly to the outbreak and it never returned in that spot! I had three points on my lips that would break out in different ways at different times. I used it each time a new location erupted and I haven’t had one in over two years!

I’ve discovered that propolis mixed with honey suppresses the frequency of outbreaks. I take 1/2 tsp. once or twice a week. It comes premixed as a paste from Y.S. Eco Bee Farms. They call it Propolis Extract. If I feel an outbreak, I also apply some with a swab, it seems to reduce the size and healing time, too. I also take one (two if I feel stressed or that I ate too much arginine rich food) Super Immune capsule (Quantum brand) each night before bed most nights.

I haven’t seen anyone mention it so far— Organic honey is the BEST fever blister fix. I used to get them all the time and thus have tried everything in the book. Smudging on some organic honey at the very onset will knock the sucker out every time! I have had fever blisters begin to crop up, but after one or two applications, they vanish— no scabbing phase!

As well as taking l lysine orally. It helps but the only thing I found that knocks them out from the beginning was oral rx meds. I have one now, from chapped lips and am gonna try the coconut oil & tea tree oil. 2 days before christmas & I look like Ive been punched in the face. :(

Hi everyone. I get fever blisters on my nose…. looks gastly, and extremely sensitive, not a joke when you’re suffering from alergies as well (run-down).
I landed up on this site, when I recherched the connection between “tea tree oil” and “fever blister”.
After the fever blister manifested itself (thus actually I was a bit slow to become aware of it), I used an ointment described by my doctor called “Aciclovir 5%”. This morning whilst washing my hair with tea tree shampoo (great natural stuff – advise people from suffering from any scalp issues to read up on it) I remembered that Tea Tree Oil is fantastic for all kind of skin problems – so I washed my nose area generously with the shampoo – the relief and calming effect were quite remarkable…. so I decided to Google evidence/confirmation – and here I am on your website :-)

I also read up in a book by Margaret Roberts, “Tissue Salts for Healthy Living” (ISBN 978 1 77007 773 7) and the Tissue Salts 3 & 9 are recommended to correct the balance of our organism from the inside.
I’m taking them at the moment at the relief and recovery is wonderful.

    Hope that this helps anyone.
P.S. it is wonderful to read that we are all looking towards natural ways to stay or regain our health, and avoiding the artificial chemical industrial junk that we are bombarded with !

steep a bag of Lipton tea, let cool until it’s tolerable and place on the “tingling” area until the bag is cool. The acid in the tea stops the sore from erupting. If you are too late to catch it, just put the teabag on the area anyway. Healing time is much quicker.

I had chronic fever blisters all thru childhood and on til I was 25. Met a kind little older lady on the street on day. She said “You poor thing. Go in the drug store and tell them you need buttermilk tablets. You must cure this where it begins..Internally.” I did and have never had one since. I am 65. They are now called Lactinex and are over the counter. However you must ask for them at pharmacy because they have to be refrigerated. I take about 6 when I first get that tingle and repeat with 4 every 4 hours til I am sure the tingle is gone. Rarely ever need them anymore. Have that tingle only if I start to get a cold or feel run down. Topical treatment does not get rid of the cause.

I didn’t read all the comments, but I did see at least one other person mention Ice Cubes! As soon as I feel that familiar tingle, I go get an ice cube, wrap in a paper towel or wash cloth and place it on my lip, I keep applying the ice, for as long as I can tolerate it, as many times a day as I can, until the virus goes back into dormancy. This remedy does seem to only be effective if you can apply the ice at the very first tingle. There have been times when I awoke in the morning and the cold sore was already well into or passing the tingle stage and the ice was not able to prevent the remainder of the outbreak cycle to play out.
The Ice Cube therapy has been my “go-to” cold sore remedy for the past 5 years and has worked every time I have used it to prevent the virus going beyond the tingle stage. I get no blisters at all when I use this remedy from the get go.
I have also had cold sores since I was just a small child, I think my father passed it onto me without knowing it as he also suffers from them.
I also avoid triggers, which for me consist mainly of over exposure to sunlight, especially in the spring when I start spending a lot more time outside in my gardens & increased/run away stress levels.
I also add L-Lysine to my diet via supplement.

I’m only 20 years old, but I’ve been getting fever blisters since I was 13. For me, my fever blisters are triggered by me playing my instrument in the band. Ti get rid of my fever blisters, when I first feel the tingle, I ice the spot for about 5-10 minutes everyday until I feel safe. I also take L-Lysine tablets, and I put 100% pure honey on it too. Honey is a great remedy for a lot of things. Its antioxidants kill bacteria which would usually distract the immune system from the virus itself. Honey also acts as a barrier between the blister and everything else, which can possibly lower its transmission to other people/surfaces. Lastly, I occasionally apply Aloe Vera juice. I do all of this through all stages of the blister. However, I leave out the ice treatment once the scab forms. With these methods and a little practice, my fever blisters go unnoticed by my peers and people in general until the scab phase, and even then, the scab is so small people think I burned myself drinking coffee or something.

THIS WORKS!! I had a blister pop up overnight, it was swollen and already blistered and had just popped and was painful. I turned to Pinterest and found this, and I mixed it up since I already had everything.
Thank you so much for this post!
Like I said, my blister was already going full force. As soon as I put coconut oil+tree tree oil on it, it felt better and looked like it disappeared on my lip. I reapplied every time it started to bother me or when I felt like there was nothing on my lips, and it’s like this blister completely disappeared. It never got to the awful scab stage, and healed so much quicker. I just had to come back here and thank you!
I know my trigger: when I have too much caffeine and not enough water, I get dehydrated and my lips turn red. The day after that I will get a blister. Next time, I will apply this mixture before the blister even pops up!

I have been getting cold sores, or as I call them ‘fever blisters’ since I was about 10. I was presrvibed ‘acyclovir’ and I have used that everytime to stop them. As soon as I feel it coming I pop a pill. Taking them three times a day at the get go typically stops them. About a year ago I discovered tea tree oil as a remedy. I have begun applying that and have noticed a huge difference if I apply at the start. They rarely get to the ugly blister stage anymore. I have never tried the coconut oil additive but since I’m a coconut oil lover I must. I will also be giving the honey trick a try as well. Thanks for all these tips, ladies! It’s great to know I’m not alone!

I too have suffered with fever blisters for years. Unfortunately my job does not allow me to drop what I’m doing to try to head off an attack, so my remedy is for those who have an “in progress” blister. Now most of you will laugh at this because it’s an ironic fix. But my solution for speeding up the healing for a fully formed blister is Preparation H, it’s basically formulated to reduce the swelling and irritation so why not try it somewhere else. I apply it 3-4 times daily until the blister subsides. I had tried Abreva, Herpecin, and just about every other otc cream, but my best results come from the Prep H. If anyone else tries this I would be interested if it worked for you too.

sitting here with ice on my lip and tea tree oil sitting on my desk. lol never had fever blisters until i was in my 30’s. I get one bad one once a year and always in the exact same spot on my bottom lip. It spreads and hurts really bad. My whole lip inside and out swells up. Takes 4-6 weeks to heal. About 7 hours ago I noticed a small spot that was for sure a fever blister starting. It was 7 hours before I could get home and try to find some help on the internet. With Christmas eve and Christmas starting tomorrow i sure don’t need no ugly huge fever blister. i hope im not to late with the ice. The blister is about the size of the round part of a pencil. On hand I have the tea tree oil and garlic. Next trip to the store Im going to get some virgin coconut oil to have on hand. Recently divorced from a 24 year marriage so my stress level is very high and I’m sure the reason for the fever blister. I appreciate you taking the time to try and help others. Thank you sweetheart. Merry Christmas XOXOXO Kim , from a little town in Kentucky called Russellville

I am surprised by some people saying their fever blisters don’t go away in a 10 day period. Every virus goes away in 10 days, I thought. And on another note, I have read that Cod Liver Oil is a very bad supplement–especially for older people who’ve taken it for years–because of its toxicity. It builds up too much and each new addition of it makes it worse. Sorry to but in, but I’m always fearful when I see someone recommend it. Wish I were wrong and I hope I am.

I just had a fever blister last 3 weeks from start to end, the worst I’ve ever had just 2 weeks ago. So yes they last more than 10 days. I don’t understand it sometimes, especially this last trigger I had because it seemed like nothing worked. Thank you for posting will try this!

I get them from chopped lips, and i ate 2 pears this week and the tingling sensation came after that. 3 days later i see the little bumps. I applied carrasyn gel and ice alternatively and when drying honey. The gel burns it in a day or two what takes time is the scab. Any suggestions please.

Hi just read your post. A remedy that I use is preparation H. I know sounds weird but if you apply it as soon as u feel the tingle it will provent it from surfaceing. If it’s already surfaced apply whole milk with a cotton ball. After use the Preparation H. I use clean swab every time I apply. I apply all day long. Works wonders a dermatologist suggested it.

L-lysine tablets definitely help. I’ve recently tried Geranium essential oil and it’s by far the best thing I’ve tried yet. Apply 3 drops to a q-tip and lightly swab over and around the area. It works best if you catch it before it blisters but it does help heal the blister more quickly also. Make sure you E.O. Is 100% pure. Also, be careful around your mouth as Geranium can irritate your mucous membranes. Most of my blisters are above or below my lip or in my nose… I wouldn’t recommend full strength if it’s inside your lip. Works great!

I will have to try this. I’ve been getting cold sores frequently since I was a small child. I keep qtips and hand sanitizer in my purse if I get that tingle when I’m out of the house. I then pop two 1gm tablets of Valtrex and then smear the area with Zovirax cream. If the bump progresses I apply alcohol to it repeated to burn the crud out of it and dry the area and then pop more pills and slather more cream on it.

I keep my pillow case changed and change my washcloth and towels after every use. I’m so frightened that my children will get this annoyingly frustrating virus and have to live with it the way I have. My husband is lucky – in 20 years together he’s managed to either be immune or not catch the virus. I love a natural remedy so I’ll have to try this.

You might try wearing a Band-Aid over the sore when you go to bed. Then you won’t have to change your pillow case or blankets, towels and cloths.

Broth made from the bones of either chicken or beef. If you cook a chicken, throw the bones in a pot with carrots, onions, and celery. Cover it with water and simmer for 12-24 hours. Strain and you now have some highly nutritious immune boosting bone broth.

My friend told me to put ice in my lip as soon as the tingling starts. It has worked every time for me. Wrap an ice cube in a paper towel and wet it then place it on the spot that’s tingling. The tingling will get more intense then start to retreat. Hold it on for as long as the tingling is there. Give it a break after a few minutes then back on again till tingling ends. It really works if you catch it as soon as tingling starts.

I get these inside my nose (weird I know). They feel like really painful boogers then scabs. But I’ve found that applying a small amount of Oil of oregano (Oregonol) with a qtip a few times a day and also taking oil of oregano capsules in addition to vitamin c and lysine has stopped them before they get further along.

Using a combination of a prescription containing “acyclovir” and taking L-Lysine pills helps to get rid of a blister in about 3 days. Also applying Abreva frequently helps in its healing :)

Acyclovir and Abreva never worked for me very well. That’s what I was using before I discovered the coconut oil with tea tree oil. When I use these right away the full blister never firms. I’m glad you found something that works for you though. I’m sure every body is unique. Thanks for the comment.

I use peroxide. I sometimes take a pin to break the surface before it starts getting bad and swab it with peroxide several times a day. You can tell the peroxide works since it bubbles up and dries it out. I need to try the coconut oil and tree oil. For me I’ve found drying it out works best.

I get them several times a year and it seems as if when I stop ones if pops up elsewhere. :(

When I got up yesterday morning I could feel the dreaded warm tingly bump forming. When I get a fever blister they last for two weeks. It’s awful. I’ve tried Abreva and various concoctions to get rid of them and nothing ever works. I googled “How to get rid of a fever blister fast” and this page came up. I decided to give the coconut and tea tree oil a shot because I didn’t know what else to do and I had the ingredients on hand. IT WORKED! My blister never got past the small bump stage. I’m still applying the paste three times a day until it goes away. The bump is usually huge the day after I first spot it.

For anyone who hasn’t coconut and tea tree oil for fever blisters then you need to. This stuff worked well!

THANKS Tara. I am so glad you posted this solution. I got the tree tea oil and coconut oil and started applying it last night and continued applying it today and I have seen and felt how it is getting rid of these bad things!!! I like home remedies over OTC meds any day. I like to share a home remedy for GERD (acid reflex) with you. You may already know this but here goes. LEMONS skins. scrap the lemon skin again your teeth until the skin is smooth (almost like lemon zest) cut the lemon into quarters and use two of the quarters. the gerd will disappear faster than taking OTC meds

This is the first thing I’ve ever read that backs up what my bf and his mom say about their fever blisters! Thank you!! If/when I feel like im going to get one I immediately go to action with peroxide, then witch hazel, then the medicaded cream. Peroxide sanitizes then witch hazel dries it out, but I’d much rather use the all natural way than the expensive creams. And coconut oil and tea tree are two things I never live without!

I personally have found that the use of Apple Cider Vinegar works best. I have tried abreva, herpicin and Valtrex, either they took long or didnt work at all for me. I soaked cotton ball or q-tip in the apple cider vinegar and hold it on blister site for as long as I can( i would do it as I drove, watched tv, or layed in bed at night) just as soon as I am able after discovering ihave them forming. The A.C.V. seems to eat away at the blisters/virus, drying them up and scabs within a day or two after doing this a few times. Within week and half scabs are gone and im back to normal, less if im lucky enough for scabbing to be minimal.

When the bubbles or bumps (2 to be exact) started to form on my lip I immediately dabbed hydroperoxide on it, watched it sizzle a little bit. Wiped it off with skin prep or an alcohol wipe. Then I iced it for about an hour. Wiped it again with an alcohol wipe. Dabbed Granulex on it with a Q-tip. Let the Granulex work it’s magic overnight then in the morning I wiped it off with another alcohol wipe, then applied a small amount of Aquaphor on my lips . My fever blister never open, it dried out, and went away. I believe keeping the sore dry will speed up the process of healing and or preventing it from opening and starting that crusty nasty look. Hope this helps

Oh my goodness! ! I am so glad I found this article! ! I happened to be using coconut oil because I could not find that something when I got a cold sore. My mom swore by Vaseline so that’s always what I used. This time when I used the coconut oil and noticed that in approximately three and a half days the blisters lasted maybe 12 hours and the crud never came. I knew that it had to be the coconut oil. So this morning I Google coconut oil and fever blisters and I found this article. Thank you! Now I am going to find tea tree oil today so that is always ready when these fever blisters begin their tingle. I am so happy because mine’s usually last approximately two weeks. And with the coconut oil alone it is gone just about gone and it is only been 4 days so I can only imagine what is going to be like with the tea tree oil. This is definitely a lifesaver.

I am SO glad I found this article – THANK YOU so much for writing it!! I recently started using tea tree oil on pimples, works like a charm. I was at the store when I had an itch on my lip and discovered a fever blister already forming out of nowhere, as usual for me. So then of course comes the dread and thinking about all the ways I can hide myself for the next week in a half. Then I thought what if a natural oil works on fever blisters? I googled tea tree oil on fever blisters and found this. As soon as I got home I missed this up and applied. It literally stopped it in it’s tracks!!! Still itched and tingled but it never got bigger, or red or scabed! I was the only person who knew it was there. It’s been 3 days and it’s all healed up!! THANK YOU!!

Campho is a joke, also something else that works is every night before bed ,take a cotton swab with apple cider vingager and treat your lips and all around.once daily immune tablets that dissolve on tongue, keep your immune in tip top shape since fever blisters are systematic .next checkup ,let your doctor know you would like a script for hydrocortisone cream 1%.during stressful days or anytime you feel that tingle or bump, smear a coat of it on…this cream will take any skin issue away asap like majic, and no scarring.

I’ve found it dries up faster if not moist…. my . whole life, like you I’ve had the fear of public humiliation of these. I hate it….I’ve had it as a child it is not ! a STD…. it doesn’t mean your unclean….

Ice, anything drying but moisture for mine makes it last longer. I’ve never had oozing, never been able to pop mine.. ever…. I’m confused as to have so many others say their’s is and I’ve never had that experience. It looks blister like but not filled with anything and it never has anything to pop. Mine do not hurt… they just look bad???

You can have them frozen at the derm’s office with liquid nitrogen. I’m using wart remover today to see if that works… it’s ether. But frozen food packs or frozen fruit in a bag to keep it from getting wet and keep ice on it to make it retreat!

I’m just curious if mine is like something different? Strange …. are there different strains?

I, unfortunately, never catch a fever blister in the making but I’ve also been struggling with them my whole life. I’ve eventually found that if you just prick the blister with a needle and dap some rubbing alcohol on it with cotton wool it will dry up almost immediately and will be gone in two days or sometimes the next day. Just a warning: It burns very badly so be prepared!

I’m a nurse and back in the day, they would not allow you to work if you had a fever blister. Most of us would just disguise it as best we could with makeup and work anyway. One day an elderly woman patient of mine saw my current cold sore in disguise and told me about a way to prevent them from happening. This is going to sound ick but I’ve tried it and I’ve not had a cold sore in over 20 yrs now, when I used to get them several times a year. Ear wax. Yep…you heard me. Even a little bit, applied when you first feel a tingle or itch in that area, will stop the whole thing from happening. It’s worked over and over and over for me for the last 20 yrs and it will work for you too if you have the nerve to dig deep, get a little cerumen on the handle of tweezers, etc. and apply that little dab to your area. Now I make sure not to clean my ears too clean, especially in the winter months, as I don’t want to be caught without any to apply. I can just hear the “ewwwwwww!” s echoing out there but what is ear wax, exactly? It’s just cerumen, a waxy substance designed to protect and clean the ear…it’s not dirty or unhygienic to apply it to another skin surface. If it is, your ears are just nasty!! LOL I don’t know why it works, but it does work. Even if I don’t catch it in time and develop a few small blisters there, I can apply the ear wax and they dry up and are gone within a day or so. No more scarring, no more embarrassment, no more shame. Earwax. Love it.
